Daily Prompt: Earworm

What song is stuck in your head (or on permanent rotation in your CD or MP3 player) these days? Why does it speak to you?

“Falling For You” – The 1975

For the past few weeks, I have been listening to this English alternative band The 1975. I feel like I missed out on a lot because I discovered them just recently when in fact, they’ve been around for a couple of years already. One evening while tuned in to PlayFM, the DJs played the song “Girls.” I found myself liking the song (I was bobbing my head, tapping my fingers, and feeling a bit better after a long day at work) and when I got home, I downloaded songs from their EPs and listened to each one. I just fell in love with their music.

A few of my favorites – of course “Girls,” “Chocolate,” and the most played one on my iPod, “Falling For You.” This song is part of their IV EP, and of all their songs this one has been stuck and playing in my head on and on…

What time you coming down?
We started losing light.
I’ll never make it right
If you don’t want me around,
I’m so excited for the night,
All we need’s my bike and your enormous house
You said some day we might
When I’m closer to your height
‘Til then we’ll knock around, endlessly
You’re all I need

Don’t you see me now?
I think I’m falling, I’m falling for you,
Don’t you need me?
I, I think I’m falling, I’m falling for you,
And on this night and in this light,
I think I’m falling, I’m falling for you
Maybe you’ll change your mind
I think I’m falling, I think I’m falling

I’m caught on your coat again
You said, “Oh, no, it’s fine,”
I read between the lines
And touched your leg again, again
I’ll take you one day at a time,
Soon you will be mine,
Oh but I want you now (I want you now)
When the smoke is in your eyes,
You look so alive,
Do you fancy sitting down with me? Maybe?

You’re all I need
According to your heart,
My place is not deliberate,
Feeling of your arms
I don’t wanna be your friend,
I wanna kiss your neck

Don’t you see me?
I, I think I’m falling, I’m falling for you
Don’t you need me?
I, I think I’m falling, I’m falling for you
And on this night and in this light
I think I’m falling, I’m falling for you
Maybe you’ll change your mind

I’d plug my earphones in and listen to this song twice, three times, even six times a day. Each line, despite the slow, breathy delivery, is packed with emotion – desire, longing, at the same time excitement, hopefulness. I admit that I find the song implicitly sensual. Every time it plays in my ears, I sort of enter into a trance, the world revolves more slowly, and I can’t wait for it to finish so I can listen to it again. It is relaxing, the kind of music that makes you want to just lie down and stare at the stars and yes, it moves me to feeling a little sentimental but not sad.
