Good Food with Good Friends in Boon Tong Kee

My best friends from college planned this get-together/birthday dinner/send-off party a couple of months ago for our dear friend, Czarina, who was celebrating her birthday and was also preparing to leave the country for graduate studies. We met up in UP and come dinner time, we headed over to our new go-to place, UP Town Center. Most of the restos were full, so we chose Boon Tong Kee. It was everyone’s first time to try eating out in the Singapore-based restaurant which has been in the country for more than a year now. They serve probably one of the tastiest boiled chicken dishes I’ve come across so far.

Boon Tong Kee is located on the second floor of UP Town Center, right beside 8 Cuts. My friend, Jigs, is probably unaware that this photo will be in my blog post! πŸ™‚

The resto’s interior: there’s classic black and white furniture, it was well-lit and not crowded, and apart from the TV the only noises came from our table. πŸ™‚

Our tables were laden with these tasty dishes, thanks to our birthday celebrator. I let them choose from the array of meat, vegetables, noodles, and soups in the menu.

The Birthday Noodle (Php295) – this one instantly became everybody’s fave. The flavors from the noodles, veggies, and seafood, and the yummy sauce made for a great appetizer.

It would be an incomplete meal if we didn’t order their Signature Boiled Chicken (Half – Php425, Whole – Php795). It may look bland, but the tender chicken is really flavorful and goes well with rice.

Another variant of their chicken dish is the Crispy Roasted Chicken (Half – Php395, Whole – Php695). This one’s as savory as the boiled chicken dish, but the crunchy chicken skin makes it even more palatable, especially for us Filipinos who are big fried chicken lovers.

Now this is my personal favorite – Fried Spare Ribs with Zhen Jiang Sauce (Php395). It’s delectable, even the buns on the side. The gooey sauce wasn’t bothersome, I really liked it!

Our last entree was the Fried Beef Fillet with Black Pepper (Php295). What I liked about this, aside from the tenderness of the beef, is that it’s not too oily and the pepper isn’t overpowering.

We were intrigued by the beer that they serve, so we got a bottle of Tsingtao Beer (Php125). It tasted like carbonated water! Sorry. Too bland and watery.

Over sumptuous food, my friends and I bonded, discussed about life and love and happiness and other current events. Lol. I love how we can talk about one thing and move on to a completely unrelated topic and just laugh and share stories with each other for hours on end. We never run out of anecdotes, but at the same time we tackle sad or unfortunate experiences. We make sure that each meet up is some sort of a learning session, too!

One thing I’ve learned that day: the no-fail combination for a fun-filled day is this – good food and good friends.

The no-fail combination for a fun-filled day - good food and good friends.
Happy birthday and good luck, Cza! We miss you!
